There’s a lot that could be accomplished with Willis ISD’s more than $218 million planned bond package. The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the package to be voted on in the upcoming May election includes a stadium, an expansion of Willis High School, an athletic complex and stadium, a new transportation center, a student activity center and aquatic center.
According to a demographic study of the city of Willis, during the next decade their forecast calls for an additional 6,000 multi-family units and 30,000 new Willis citizens.
The study also predicts that when 2033 rolls around, the low-growth forecast is for 15,000 students and the high-growth forecast includes 21,000.
Because of the coming rise in population, there are four propositions in the bond package.
The largest proposition is Proposition A. The bond calls for the expansion of Willis High School and a new transportation center serving around 100 buses at a cost of $102 million.
Board President Kyle Hoegemeyer said that they’re trying to look far ahead at the growth and avoid winding up with portable buildings.
Proposition B includes an athletic complex and stadium and a community room at a total cost of $68 million.
The aquatic center enters the bond picture as Proposition C at over $19 million.
A $27 million student activity center is the goal for Proposition D. An activity center would have classrooms, locker rooms and a field area that is indoors.
According to Assistant Superintendent of business and finance Garrett Matej, if all the propostions are passed, there’s a possible 7.9% tax rate increase.
